I read this to my 9 year old and 7 year old sons and they absolutely loved it. The imaginative story is full of adventure and features some of the funniest heroes you'll ever come across. Packed with vivid descriptions, it's a page turner that my kids never wanted me to stop reading. I highly recommend it!
I couldn't put it down. The story captures you from the first page. The characters absolutely come alive.....Loved it!! Just hated for it to end. Awesome!!! Awesome!! read. The images created are incredible. You will become immersed immediately. The action is non stop! The main characters are lovable!! .Children won't want to wait for the next one!!! My son loved it and my daughter is next in line.
This book reminded me of some of the whimsical yet more mature stories from my childhood like Secret of Nimh and We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story. It deals with themes of fear, anxiety, and loss but in a way that is appropriate for it's intended age group. I've already mentally added this to the list of books I want to read to my future children.
I was eager to find several enjoyable books for the month of October. For me, this month is when my imagination takes off. I am so glad I came across Sign of the Sandman. It was the perfect choice! It set the mood perfectly for me. You know a book can stand on its own when the age group can vary from children to adult seamlessly and still keep you hooked.
This novel is very visual by far, and it throws you right into the action. The adventure of a lifetime is what transcends. A boy's quest of serious proportions, even a battle of light against dark.. Even so, it is still easily relatable and thrilling to read. I found myself really enjoying the humor, rooting for my favorite characters, and cringing at the not so favorite ones *shudder*. Such an exciting action packed novel will be enjoyed by anyone who happens to pick it up. Give it a chance, and share with your family or friends, it wont disappoint! )
Sign of The Sandman is a book that finds and maintains the delicate balance between a vibrant sense of wonder and the forward momentum of all great stories. In fact, the only real criticism I have is that it was over way too soon and left me wanting more of the characters and their ongoing adventure. The richness of Turner's characters and story reminds me of the (paraphrased) words of Flannery O'Connor, when she wrote that the task of the novelist is not to explain mystery but to deepen it. That is exactly what Tom Turner has done in Sign of The Sandman - he's deepened the experience of participating in the story, and in so doing has enriched anyone who reads it. This book is a gift from a gifted author.
Former Rolling Stone contributor Jon Landau once wrote "I saw my rock ‘n’ roll past flash before my eyes. And I saw something else I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the very first time." For me after reading Tom Turner's exquisite first novel "Sign of the Sandman" I understand what Mr. Landau was feeling.
There is little time nowadays with work and family to not only read but to find a book that takes away all of life's funny problems. In fact, it's been awhile (probably 7 years) since I opened a book and felt so enraptured that I had hard time stopping. Well, Thank You Mr. Turner for changing that!
Tom Turner enabled me to once again have the overwhelming feeling of being enthralled with a book. Of not being able to put it down but afraid to keep reading because I did not want to leave the world he created.Of cheering wildly for my new heroes and cursing at their enemies. Tom Turner has created characters from our brave Charlie to the spunky and hilarious best friend Plug that seem to not only come alive but thrive on adventure which is what exactly this book is; a great adventure. Led by Charlie and Plug, the reader is taken on a wild ride from the streets of NYC to a brand new world "Dreamscape" and there are twists and turns at each stop.
It's hard to write this review without spoilers but I'd like to say that this book is a throwback to the great novels that you read growing up. It's a fantasy book with drama, action, comedy and even a hint of romance! I remember the first time I read Harry Potter and was amazed to discover a new world. I thank Mr. Turner for allowing me to do that once again.
So, just as Jon Landau was so enamored with Mr. Springsteen that he quit his job and became his manager; I wish to ask Mr. Turner - Can I be your manager?
I loved this book!!!
This is a wonderful fist novel by author, Tom Turner.
The story grabs you and pulls you in from page one. The main character, Charlie and his best friend Plug are so loveable and is was a thrill to follow them on their journey as they become unlikely hero's.
The author's storytelling creates a vivid tapestry of Charlie's reality and dream world, I actually felt like I was there with the boys.
Every time I had to put the book down, I couldn't wait to get back to it!
I would highly recommend this book! It definitely has the makings of the next great children's adventure story!!!
I sure hope that it is not the last we see of Charlie and Plug.......series, maybe?????
